Turns out I am quite a renaissance person. I can probably do it all if I really wanted to. I don’t want that last statement to come off arrogant, it’s anything but actually. I’ve recently acknowledged and accepted who I am, and that is a amazing, strong, beautiful woman and I am sharing it with the world. In other words I am letting my light shine. No more hiding my brilliance, not even from myself. In acknowledging who I am I’ve finally realized all the things I’ve accomplished in my life and all of the things I am good at.
I am a licensed architect, I am a certified massage therapist, I can carry a note and have been told with a some practice and a vocal coach I could be phenomenal singer. I am a good dancer, learning new dance steps on the fly as I see the moves in real time. I danced bachata for the very first time last September, by the third song my dance partner could not believe I’d never danced bachata before that night. I am a good cook too. Recently I’ve been doing a lot of cooking at home for a house guest here and there… and I’ve surprised myself when I manage to serve something up that’s quite delicious. Just ask my good friend Mary, she claims some of my dishes “changed her life,” I say it was the grass-fed beef rib-eye steaks from Belcampo and the organic free-range chicken thighs skin on from Whole Foods that made it so.
I could have been a good athlete, but never tried organized sports till after college and by then it was more recreational like co-ed softball and women’s rugby. I played one season as a forward on the Santa Monica Women’s Rugby team. I had so much fun even though I didn’t really know what I was doing or where I should be half the time. I ended up separating my shoulder towards the end of the season and that was the end of my career as a rugby players, but now I can add that to my resume.
I am also a good mentor/teacher/listener. I credit that skill due to my ability to be authentic and myself around younger people. I don’t try to impress kids by trying to come off cool and hip. I’m just me around kids and that comes off cool. I can say that because my two oldest nieces have posted on IG referring to me as their “cool aunt.”
My next venture is going to be an improv class with Mary, she claims I’m a natural… we’ll see about that. Maybe some day I will try my hand at standup comedy at an amateur night at a comedy club or something. Hip hop dance lessons and graphic art or painting are also in my future.
